Before we dive into the Being Brave Challenge for this week, how did you do with the 1st Challenge: Smile & say hello to a stranger?
I personally found that by setting the intention, a smile came much easier for people I didn’t know.
Here’s what one person said about it:
“Heading into Costco today everyone looked so grumpy. I couldn’t believe they weren’t thrilled by the possibilities which lay in store for them! I got one smile out of a granddad with his little one. (Or it could be a dad, ya never know!). I sometimes make a challenge to see who i can get to break out their smile.” – J.
Here’s the story before we get to the 2nd Being Brave Challenge.
For Halloween 2013, I went as a “complimentary muffin”. The idea was the costume mimicked a muffin and I was to give compliments to everyone. Halfway through the night, a friend told me that I was doing a terrible job – I hadn’t given anyone compliments.
“UGH, I know it,” I said. “I should have re-thought this costume idea. I’m terrible at giving compliments.”

Nowadays, I’m much better at complimenting someone, but still freeze up from time to time.
Do you ever get scared that people will think you are strange for approaching them with a compliment? That’s how I feel, too, sometimes, but that has never been the reaction.
Instead, people are usually thrilled that someone noticed them in a positive light. It becomes pretty obvious that you’ve brightened up someone’s day.
One time, I told a waitress that her eye makeup looked great. She was so pleased, telling me she was concerned that it had been “too much”. By getting that compliment, she felt a bit more confident in her choice!
And recently, I sparked up a great conversation with someone, just by complimenting her outfit.
Here’s your being brave challenge for this week!
Give a genuine compliment to a stranger. They may just smile and say thanks, but it could also lead to an interesting conversation!
