Here’s the story of how I figured out how to solve this problem, and perhaps how it can help you, too.

Back in 2020, when we had a lot of time to reflect on our lives, I realized that something felt very off with me. It seemed like I had reached a plateau in my therapy sessions and self-help methods, but there was still a hole in my heart. I felt stuck.

I knew I couldn’t move forward in my life until I could let go of it. I had an idea of what it was – anger and resentment about former boyfriends – and I was tired of carrying around the emotional burden.

It was time to try something else. I asked around and found a Reiki Master to help me with healing myself energetically.

Back then, I had no idea what Reiki really was or how it worked. I just figured it was worth a shot. 

During that first session, it was relaxing, I had some interesting memories and thoughts surface, and felt a renewed sense of self

Afterwards, the Reiki practitioner even gave me a healing technique to really let go of that anger. 

And guess what?

After only one Reiki session and using her technique, things started shifting. I no longer felt stuck and I was able to forgive myself and those ex-boyfriends, finally moving on with my life. I even had more confidence and felt stable for the first time in a while. It was a new ME. 

I was hooked, so I kept going for more Reiki sessions. 

Reiki helps to uncover pieces of me that were hidden away, and gently release painful memories that have weighed me down all these years. 

The miracles I’ve witnessed have made me a big advocate for Reiki healing, which led to my own journey in becoming a certified Reiki Master.

Since then, I’ve worked with many people to help them find balance, get back on their life path, and heal emotional pain.

One of my clients struggled with restless leg syndrome for years, on an almost daily basis. Because the restless leg happened at night, it was causing him to consistently have poor sleep

What Reiki revealed: Everything from his hips, legs, and feet gets blocked, which creates the uncomfortable restless leg sensations. He has an old injury in his back, which is the source of the energy block, but he also holds stress and tension in his leg and hip area. 

During the session, when I balance the energy out and remove the blocks, he typically feels sensations like electricity moving through his legs. 

Afterwards, he reports:

  • feeling calmer
  • his sleep has dramatically improved
  • symptoms from the restless leg syndrome are rare, only happening a couple times a month

Just like maintaining a car or going to a chiropractor, he typically does receive Reiki twice a month, because the blocks do tend to come back after a while.

What is Reiki?

You may have gotten this far and been wondering what Reiki even is. Below are some explanations about Reiki, your body’s energetic flow, and how Reiki helps balance it all out.

This is an excerpt from “What is Reiki, Who can Learn it?” on the International Center for Reiki training website: “Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Here’s the short answer: this healing method aids in balancing your energy so you can feel more content and stable in life. If you are having trouble with forgiving yourself, letting go of old memories, or just feel like life is sideways right now, Reiki could be beneficial to your healing and getting you back on track.

Now I’ll explain how some energy practitioners (including me) see your energy moving through. Refer to the photo below and think of your body like a series of rivers or waterfalls. 

  1. Energy starts in the top of your head (your crown chakra), and flows down like water through your neck, torso, legs and feet, as well as arms and hands. 
  2. The energy exits your hands and feet. 
  3. If something blocks that flow of energy, it becomes stagnant and can’t flow through the rest of your body. That block could be caused by a painful memory, emotion, stress, or many other factors. 

A Reiki healer uses an energetic life force that exits out of their hands. By hovering over different areas of your body, we use this energy to remove those blocks and get your energy flowing again. 

Have you ever been to an acupuncturist? They use needles to pinpoint certain energy flow areas and balance your energy. Reiki is similar, but instead of using needles, we work within your chakras and use our hands. There’s a video below that helps explain this even further.

This is something I see very often when working with clients. Refer to the image above. 

Say your energy was blocked in your solar plexus, which is the yellow chakra right above your naval. This is your confidence center – how you feel about yourself. 

Let’s say your confidence has been low at work lately and that is causing the energy to get blocked up.

Energy is unable to flow past this point, so your 

  • creativity is stagnant (orange sacral chakra directly below)
  • you might feel less stable in your daily life (red root chakra below this)
  • you may even be having trouble moving forward with decisions (energy not flowing through your feet)

Using the Reiki healing energy, we would help you let go of some of that resentment and boost your confidence to remove the block (sometimes by bringing up past memories or helping work through the emotion). 

This lets energy flow again, thereby:

  • bringing back your creativity
  • giving you more stability in life 
  • grounding your feet to make decisions easier

Some studies have been done about the scientific effects of Reiki, but there is still more research to do. This article by Forbes gives a few examples:

“Researchers at Harvard Medical School followed 99 patients at multiple sites to determine the effects of a single Reiki session. The study—a single arm effectiveness study published in 2019 in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine—found statistically significant improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as pain and nausea.

Additional research suggests Reiki helps with depression and insomnia. A 2012 study in the Indian Journal of Positive Psychology looked at 40 women who suffered from depression and anxiety. Half of the group received a Reiki treatment twice a week for 10 weeks and the other half received no treatment. The women who received Reiki saw significant improvements in both their depression symptoms and sleep quality.”

Additionally, the article states that over 15% of U.S. hospitals offer Reiki to patients as a complement to medical care.

FAQ’s about a Reiki Session with Emma

Send Emma any concerns (physical or mental) that you are experiencing.

Find a quiet space in your room to lay down. Be sure you are undisturbed for 45 minutes. Turn off your phone notifications/ring tone and any other distractions. Pick out some calming music to listen to during the session (The Insight Timer app has some great 1-hour song tracks). You can light a candle or use essential oil if you prefer.

After settling in, you get to relax! Don’t worry about doing anything except laying quietly without distractions. Thoughts or sensations may come up. Don’t dwell on them, but do take note of what happens. You may even fall asleep.

When the session is over, it is helpful to debrief with me over a phone call or virtually for 15 minutes or so. We can talk about what you experienced, as well as what I noticed while I was doing the Reiki for you. During this time, we will discuss next steps you can take along your own journey, such as meditations, books, or activities that may help you with breakthroughs.

You’ll want to drink plenty of water for the next couple days to help flush out the stagnant energy we released during the Reiki. You may have interesting dreams, memories, or revelations surface. Your mood might even be different. This is part of the healing. Let them go.

Overall you should be feeling better – more peaceful, grounded, and clear-headed. If you have a bit of a mood swing show up at first, that’s okay. It will go away. Please reach out to me if you have questions about what’s happening.
