Avoiding Yourself

But first, a quick story.

I realized lately that I’ve been avoiding myself. I was putting on music, podcasts, the television…anything to distract from some tough emotions that wanted to show up.

Sometimes that’s okay to do, especially if it all feels like too much. But what I didn’t recognize was that I had fallen back into some old habits of stuffing everything down. Sadly, all that did was put me on an emotional rollercoaster, with tears coming up randomly and heavy depression setting in.

Yesterday, I finally sat with myself for an hour, simply focusing on my breath in a “traditional” meditation. The emotions rolled over me and I cried so much. But I finally understood why I had been feeling so bad and let go of many of those old things that wanted to surface.

Was it fun? No. But I feel lighter, motivated, focused, and more myself today than I have in several days.

So often we get fixated on “fixing” ourselves. I’m guilty of it all the time. What came up yesterday, though, was the word, “just.” JUST breathing. JUST loving. JUST living. No fixing. No trying. JUST being.

If you’ve been avoiding yourself, cramming in busy-ness or distraction, it’s okay. Perhaps reading this will help you realize you have been doing it. 

If so, can you sit and pay attention to yourself for 10 minutes this evening? Maybe that’s all your soul needs to reconnect or show you a message. It might hurt a bit to receive the information, but the awareness of what you really need will set you free.
