Is it possible to experience failure and triumph at the same time?
I’m going to tell you a short story today about my own experience.
During our camping trip this week, my boyfriend and I did a hike up Hahn’s Peak. At the top, there is a historic fire tower.
When we set out, we didn’t expect to go all the way up there. We only had one water bottle, I was wearing old shoes, and we had both of the dogs. I was really enjoying the views, the flowers, and the exercise. It all felt so peaceful.
But as soon we saw the fire tower from below, it suddenly became the goal to go all the way up.
So, we kept going up the steep inclines, pushing through my sore knees, slipping on the rocky trail, now with no water for myself or the dogs.
Until I finally said, “No. I won’t go any further.”
Sure, I could have gone up all the way. But my gut was telling me it was a bad idea. After some discussion, we went back down.
We were both disappointed to be giving up, but I also felt triumph in my ability to know my own body.
Triumph to be able to use my voice to say “no”, instead of just going along with something I didn’t agree with.

Up until a couple years ago, I was scared to tell others “no”, to disagree, or speak up for what I really needed. Frankly, I had the hardest time standing up for myself with former boyfriends. I allowed myself to be pushed into things that weren’t right for me and felt I had no control over it.
If this had happened back then, I would have just struggled through that experience, probably regretting the entire situation. Possibly hurting myself or having my dogs get dehydrated and sick in the process.
It hasn’t been easy to find my voice and stand up for myself. It’s taken many years to get even a little comfortable with it, and even still, I sometimes start shaking after I speak my truth.

Everything comes with practice, so these kinds of little situations only bring more strength.
What has helped me most in this process has been doing Reiki on myself. It has dramatically increased my confidence in my voice.
The throat chakra is what energetically represents communication, expression, purpose, and your voice. When this gets blocked up, it’s harder to express your needs. Mine was very clogged for a long time, but it’s been much better since focusing on it through Reiki.
Another way to strengthen your voice is to sing out loud to your favorite songs. Try it for yourself and see. My bet is you’ll feel a little more confident.
If you’ve been working to find your voice or build up your confidence, you might consider doing a Reiki session with me. You can find more details here or I’m happy to chat with you on the phone. Contact me to set up a time to talk.
