In 2019, I did something kind of nuts. I signed up to participate in the Spartan Race.
At the time, I had no clue what it even was. My kickboxing gym was getting a group together to do it, and I thought, “Oh, what the hell, that sounds like it could be fun.”
My friends, Joe and Jayme, decided to do it with me, too.
Months went by, and I kept going to my gym, but I wasn’t doing anything different.
Fast forward to one day before the race. My friend, Sam, showed me videos of the competition. He decided to sign up, too, because I was doing it.
I should never have watched those videos!
I couldn’t sleep that night at all.
I kept asking myself, “Why did I sign up for this? I’m not this strong or fit to do those crazy things!”
Unbeknownst to me, I had been preparing for this race the whole time.
By working out regularly at my gym, the skills to go through the obstacles were engrained into me by the kickboxing trainers.
The day of the race, despite having no sleep, I had a great time.
Sure, the activities were difficult, but I did my best and kept going. I was able to do most of them and even went up and over the rope obstacles (somehow I overcame my fear of heights that day).
And I finished.
I didn’t place, but I was super proud of myself for doing it.

Hiding or Living in Fear of the Unknown
If you are like the 2019-version of me, you may not want to know what is coming into your life.
You may like to put your head in the sand, hoping and praying that things are all great.
You know, that’s totally okay. No judgement coming from me! As long as it isn’t hindering your life with fear or instability.
How to Prepare for the “Unknown”
However, you may find that you are more like the 2025-version of me. You may like to prepare, plan, and have awareness of your life and what’s coming.
That Spartan Race was a big turning point in my life.
Because since then, I’ve found that understanding and prepping for my future gets me a lot further.
I have an awareness of my own shortcomings so I know:
- what skills to work on
- where to seek resources/help
- what could potentially go wrong
For instance, had I prepared for the Spartan Race, I would have known to bring goggles so that muddy water wouldn’t get into my contacts and prevent me from seeing for several minutes during the competition.
And had I been aware, I probably would have trained harder, and actually tried to place in the match, rather than simply getting a participation trophy.

“Wow, this meditation brought some much needed and, dare I say, bad@$$ relief! Not only did I meet my throat chakra, but she was a warrior, and she stood strong and tall, and she was very brave. [In the meditation], she courageously said and did what she has been yearning to but not knowing how to do for so long.” – C
“[During the meditation], my dad and mom both showed up. But then my middle school track coach, who I actually really liked, showed up. He told me ‘you are a lot better at things than you think you are.’ I guess it was related to not getting picked for many of the track sports.” – E
“My chakra was dripping wet – subdued, skinny, frail. I was not able to identify the 3 people although I still thanked them and released them. The only word that I kept feeling was “Love”. I also did get a slight sense of writing more and speaking less. I am incredibly outspoken and don’t usually hold back my words – unless I’m really angry and then I do because I don’t want to say something I’ll regret later – so maybe that’s the point – learning how to still say the words in a better delivery.” – M
